Believe me when I say that this is not over. It never will be, because defeat is impossible.

Today, I am proud to be an American. Today, I am proud to be a Californian. California is a wonderful state–we are helping to lead the way in green technology, we now have awesome new plans for a coastal bullet train, we have one of the largest economies in the world and we have one of the most diverse populations in all of America–ethnically, religiously, and economically. I will always be proud to hail from California’s sandy beaches and prone-to-wildfire valleys. And I am proud to share a state with the people of San Francisco, Santa Barbara, Monterey, Napa, Alpine, San Mateo, Santa Cruz and countless other counties who opposed the proposition to ban gay marriage. As for sunny LA, well…it may be beautiful here right now, but we have now a city full of ashamed, distraught people.
How is the idea that homosexual and heterosexual marriages are one and the same so appalling to people? I don’t understand this. We claim to be a nation of equality, of opportunity and progress (and with the general election, that has never seemed more true than now) and yet we treat members of our communities as different, abnormal, even threatening? If you, or anyone you know, are among those who celebrate the ‘protection of marriage’ today, I hope you understand one thing: what happened in this city, this state, and the states of Florida and Arizona, was not your victory. It was your loss. You voted for an amendment to our constitution that took away the rights of our citizens—you voted for intolerance, selfishness and injustice. We missed our chance to prove to the world and to our neighbors that the idea of civil rights is still alive and well in this world–that fear of what is different from us does not rule us.
That’s where this Prop 8 comes from. You can talk all you want about the history of marriage, you can quote your scriptures, but when it comes down to it, the Yes on Prop 8 comes from a place inside people that are truly afraid of those who are not exactly like them. And these ‘different’ people asked for your support in their endeavor to be treated with the same compassion, respect and dignity as you would treat anyone else. We failed them today, and in doing so, failed ourselves. We are not a completely tolerant society. We are not a society of absolute morality and complete equality. We make mistakes, and this was one of them—a huge, blundering error. Because now, we have set a dangerous precedent. Is this a country where people’s rights can simply be taken away because a majority decides they shouldn’t have those rights? Prop 8 passing means yes, that’s what type of country this is. And this day will forever be a black mark on the history of our state and our country—it is the first time we as Americans have voted to eliminate the pre-existing rights of a group of people, and that goes against everything we as Americans stand for—whether you are Democrat or Republican, Christian, Jewish, Muslim or non-denominational, gay or straight, we all live in this country because it is a country of opportunity, of equality and progress. The passing of Prop 8 is a complete disregard of those values.
I have no doubt in my mind that the day will come when gays are seen as they are–no different from us, no less good, no less loving and productive members of society. The day will come when those that believe in equality of homosexuals and heterosexuals are the majority. The day will come when we look back and see the mistake we made today, and all that we are about to do to fix it. It is time to fight for the rights of our brothers, sisters, neighbors and friends whose voices have been stifled by a militant majority who seek to oppress their fellow people. And I know we will fight, and I know the American spirit of equality will prevail, just as it has from our beginnings. From the very start of our country, to the civil war, women’s suffrage and the civil rights movement, we have fought for equality. Each time, we have prevailed, and discrimination has fallen behind. Eventually it will dissipate, too tired, too old an idea to keep up with the progress of America. This day will come.

So i just found out from noonprop8.com that none other than SAMUEL L JACKSON narrates the newest (and in my opinion, best) No on 8 TV ad.

This is amazing. I can’t even grapple with the intensity of this discovery. It’s like fighting against something for so long and then suddenly freaking Mace Windu arrives and cuts down an entire army of clones. (Yeah, you know what I’m talking about. Anyone who saw the Star Wars: Clone Wars Cartoon Network series…anyone quite as dorky as me…No, okay, let’s just…I never said that.) Anyway, his BAMFness alone should tip the scale in our favor, and if not, well, maybe those fundamentalist Christians should get a chance to meet Neville Flynn/Jules Winnfield/Mace Windu/Shaft/Rufus…dude, Ionno what I’m saying, the guy is just a freaking bad-ass. I think the fact that the King of BAMFs narrated our ads gives us like, win-status.

But other than recognizing the amazingness of Samuel L Jackson, this has a point. The Yes on 8 people go on and on about how gay marriage is being “imposed” on them, and how they shouldn’t “stand for it.” Well all I have to say is, WHAT HYPOCRITES. Besides the obvious assessment that it is their bible-based beliefs being imposed on the rest of US, why don’t we just take a look at some of the tactics their campaign have taken up?

Today, for instance, after leaving B101 to go to my car in the parkinglot, I look up at the beautiful, partly-cloudly sky and what do I see? “YES ON 8. PROTECT TRADITIONAL MARRIAGE.” In sky-writing. Seriously? That made me so angry–I mean, it’s such a nice day, I should be able to look up at the sky without being bombarded by these people imposing their views on me. It’s the sky, people. Stop imposing your beliefs on my sky!

Not only that, but while waiting for the new Questionable Content to be posted, I learn that Yes on 8 ads are appearing on websites that DO NOT affiliate themselves with the campaign. In fact, Jeph Jaques of QC is decidedly against prop 8, and was and I quote, “genuinely horrified” to find the ads on his site. He has since, rightfully, asked google to take the ads down and has put up No on 8 ads in their place (he also says he will be donating any profit made from yes on 8 ads to GLAAD). It is well and fine to campaign on sites that want to take up your position, but what right do these people have to impose their beliefs on sites whose webmasters are not only non-affiliated, but in fact AGAINST said beliefs. And QC isn’t the only site that has been accosted by Yes on 8 ads. It’s been happening to users of InsaneJournal and, I’m sure, other sites.

Honestly, I cannot think of a way the Yes on 8-ers have failed to impose themselves on me, today and for the duration of the campaign. It’s downright violating and it disgusts me that these people feel the need to hammer their belief into us in these underhanded ways. We get it. You don’t like gay people. Now let me enjoy my pretty fall day and my quasi-humorous indie webcomic in peace!

Don’t forget to vote no on 8 tomorrow. Or like, don’t forget retroactively, Erica, since you already sent in your ballot.

Have you heard people say “hey, if gay people can marry, then why not dogs and children and shit?” in order to obnoxiously prove the point that “if you want to allow all types of love, why not THESE types of love?”

Well, here’s a math problem for those idiots.

Adults are permitted to marry.
Therefore, they must be capable of making the decision to marry.

Gay adults are adults.
Adults are capable of deciding to marry.
Therefore, gay adults are permitted to marry.

Children and dogs are not adults.
Therefore, they are not capable of deciding to marry.
They are not permitted to marry.

A=B, B=C therefore A=C.

Jesus Christ, people, it isn’t that difficult to understand. Stop being an idiot and think about what you’re saying.

Also, vote no on Prop 8 because it is the correct decision. And by correct I mean complete, unbiased mathematical truth.

So here’s my idea…if we’re really going to do this, I mean.

Since we won’t be together for most of the time, what if we set up a thirty-day e-mail exchange? Every day we’ll send each other an e-mail and in it will be encouragement, nagging, little snippits of ideas, ways to get a scene or plot rolling if we’re stuck, etc. They can be really short, just a few lines. And so we don’t waste valuable novelling time, we can compose the e-mails beforehand like, right now for instance.

Or instead of e-mailing, we could post them here or put an extra page up for them or something. I don’t know. Sound good?
